Tiny footsteps patter down the hallway
echoing on the stairs in the early dawn.
I hear the worn doorknob rattle
and open one eye slightly
as I feel the quilt being tugged.
I feign sleep as huge claws
appear at the foot of the bed
and slowly make their way up.
My child in full Halloween garb
carefully stands up ready to pounce.
I throw back the covers and roar,
knocking her over and eliciting screams.
Reaching out I pull her under the covers
and cries turn to giggles.
"Did I scare you mamma?"
